I know, I know, I’ve not spoken to you in two weeks and then suddenly I’m all up in ya face with two emails in two days.
But this one’s important—especially if you feel like an imposter.
The thing is, I’ve really struggled with imposter syndrome.
It’s the reason I don’t always email you.
It’s the reason I don’t
always speak up when I should.
It’s the reason it’s taken me four years to sit down and build my course.
And, if I’m honest, it’s the reason the first draft of my next novel has sat, unedited, on my desk.
I could go on.
I’ve bought courses, tried meditation, listened to hypnotic tracks as I doze off to sleep. Heck, I even wrote a short series of articles for the Indie Author
Magazine about it. (Talk about feeling like an imposter).
They say it’s anxiety based.
They say about 82% of the population experience it — there’s safety in numbers, right? At
least I’m not the only one.
Yesterday’s email talked about expectations. What if, as creatives, we’re expecting to feel like imposters? And so, we do. A
self-fulfilling prophecy.
Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Maya Angelou have all talked about feeling like imposters.
If these big guns feel, shouldn't we feel it, too...
But… What if…
What if there’s another way of thinking about it?
This morning, as I slurped my morning brew and waited for my brain to engage, I came across an Instagram post.
It was a commencement speech given by Reshma Saujani to Smith graduates last
year.
Reshma, if you’ve not heard of her, is all about empowering women. She founded Girls Who Code and Moms First, formerly Marshall Plan for Moms. She has spent over a decade fighting the gender gap, mainly in the tech sector, but her reach is far wider.
Reshma talks about a medicalised phenomenon in the 1800’s called Bike Face. Yes. I said Bike Face.
I won’t ruin the analogy for you, she tells it far better than I could, but it’s changed the way I think about Imposter Syndrome.
Perhaps it will for you, too.
Here's the link to the Insta post : https://www.instagram.com/reel/CsoOgbpgDu9/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
I invite you to watch it, and if you do, you’ll know what I mean when I say, “we’re not imposters, we’re
just cycling uphill.”
