I was talking to the builders yesterday—we’re having an extension on the back of our house. 

Anyway, Callum, the younger of the two builders, who looks more like a scaffolding pole than a brick hod if catch my drift, said, “I’m not 'ere tomorrah, it’ll just be Zack.” 

“Oh right,” I said, “Doing anything nice on your day off?” 

“Got a funeral.” His face was deadpan bar a the flash of smile that didn’t reach his eyes. 

“Ah, gees, I’m sorry. And then before my brain had chance to connect to my gob, I said, “Was it anyone you knew?” 

And we all just stood there in a microcosm of awkwardness as all our brains went 'wtf?' 

I mean, of course it was someone he knew. Who’d take the day off work to rock up to a complete strangers funeral? Who? 

Honestly, sometimes I’m such a burke. 

Speaking of being a burke, some of you will remember I’ve set myself a challenge... 

To write 100 hooks for 30 books for 30 days. 

And I said I’d start it early to mid February…

But like a nut, I forgot I had kids…and kids have half-terms…and so they’ve got the week off school, which makes any kind of thinking let alone cranking out 100 hooks is off the cards. 

So the official start date for the challenge is the 26th February 2029 2024.
