As I was wrestling with the kids to get ready for the school run, Theo disappeared…and went quiet.
He’s three and a half, and if you’ve got little kids, you know that silence = mischief.
Then he burst out the playroom and yelled...
“Mummy! I putted my coat on all by myself.”
“Oh brilliant! Well done, you.” I tried to match his enthusiasm while hiding my ‘oh crap’ face...
He’d put his coat on upside down and managed to do the zipper.
He was so proud of himself.
The fact it was upside down didn’t matter. He’d not failed. He had, quite clearly
got his coat on.
It was right, but not quite right. A suck-sess, if you will.
If you compare his attempt with someone else, someone older, more experienced, you might think he’d
failed.
But getting it right didn't matter, getting it on was his benchmark for success.
And that brings me to the point of today’s
email.
If you're comparing your metrics, like conversion rates, opt-in rates, or email click-through rates etc, to other people, you risk feeling like you’re failing.
I see it all the time, people comparing themselves to industry averages or other authors not even in the same market.
Yeah, it’s human nature to compare ourselves to others. It’s just what we do. It’s how we learned to survive.
But you have no idea what those other people are doing to get their results.
They might have a different email frequency, or nurtured their list a certain way, they might get lots of opt-ins, but also have a high unsubscribe rate.
You don’t know.
And yet you could be making decisions based on someone else's metrics.
Here’s what I recommend instead...
Set your own benchmark for success, or suck-sess.
Because learning isn’t failing, it’s sucking-less.
So, compare your best performing email with your worst. What differences can you spot? If any.
Test a new headline on your opt-in page.
Tweak the call to
action.
Control the things you can control and worry less about what other people are doing.
If you’re struggling to find ways to improve your numbers, a funnel audit will
help.
I’ll audit your emails, scrutinise your conversions, and leave no coats upside down in the hunt for ways to improve your results. You’ll get a full report, including actionable tips and takeaways, so you can build on the stuff you’re getting right, and fix the things that aren’t.
Just tap this link to set up a free call. It’s as easy as putting your coat on.
