you on Friday.
Quite frankly, the sheer volume of Black Friday emails was ridiculous.
Well, it was in my inbox, anyway.
I’m glad it’s over.
And the number of ads and social media posts was, again, ridic.
I started counting how many emails I received, but quickly got bored, nay overwhelmed.
Everyone and their dog had an offer.
10% off, 15%, 67% off, life-time deals, ultimate bundles, affiliate offers, never-seen-before offers, and the ‘we’ll donate to charity if you buy this offer’ offer.
(Not that I’m saying donating to charity is a bad thing. Don't get me wrong there.)
I saw discounts on TVs, air fryers, and all sorts of other electrical goods.
Software discounts.
Course discounts.
Clothing discounts.
All good.
But I also saw so many coaches, editors, and other service providers trying to cash in on the Black Friday madness.
Even a certain blurb-writing guru offered a discount on his book
description writing service.
Why? Why does everyone pile in on the discounts and offers? Why do we buy into this completely made-up commercial buying frenzy?
Well, FOMO, scarcity, and urgency are the main psychological
players.
First off, there’s the scarcity. If there’s less of something, that makes us want it more.
Then there’s the urgency. The time limited offers force you to take action ,otherwise you miss out. And missing out makes us feel bad. So we get wallets out instead.
Hello FOMO!
Buyers like a bargain. No doubt about that. Getting a deal boosts our dopamine - the pleasure neurotransmitter.
And retailers or sellers also buy into the FOMO - I mean, who wants to miss out on a sale right?
