I don't think a lot of people outside the creative industry fully understand the ebbs and flows of being creative.
Take this morning for example, I had planned to sit and write this email and work on a copywriting project . . .
But, last night was so dang hot that I barely slept a wink.
There was no air-flow in our bedroom.
I was all clammy.
I was so restless.
I'd huff.
I'd sigh.
I'd grumpily toss and turn.
At 12:30am, my husband abandoned me in favour of the spare room.
I can't blame him.
He has a proper serious presentation to give today. In fact, it starts in fifteen minutes so I'd better get this email finished and get out of our shared office to give him space.
Anyway, where was I . . .
Oh yes, the ebbs and flows of creative flow.
Being in 'the zone' can feel like a really good nights sleep, it energises you, it refreshes your soul, and you feel good.
But, like my rough night last night, it can also feel like an uphill struggle.
Like a torturous nightmare.
An endless corridor of locked doors.
You worry you'll never get a descent sleep again, or in the creative case—like you'll never experience the flow state again.
Such is the life of a creative.
Don't fight it.
Embrace it.
Accept it.
I think it makes the experience all the richer.
One way I've found to trick your brain into getting into that creative flow zone was something hypnotist, Mike Mandel.
(Just misspelt hypnotist, I much prefer my version: hypnotit.)
His suggestion is to flick open a dictionary and pick the first noun or verb you see . . .
Then force your brain to use that word in a sentence or chapter.
I've used this trick a few times to help me get in the zone.
Obviously you can edit out any nonsense but it is a good way to kickstart your creativity.
That's all I've got for today. If you try this trick, hit reply and let me know if it works for you.
